Community Rallies Behind Lancers Scare Hunger

The 19th annual Lancers Scare Hunger food drive in support of Chatham Outreach for Hunger was once again a success thanks to the Ursuline College Chatham school community and local residents.

On the evening of Thursday, Oct. 29, students, staff and parent volunteers covered 60 routes across the city, collecting non-perishable food items left on porches.

This year’s collection surpassed last year's total, with donated items filling the foyer and lining the hallways of UCC.

A special thank you to VanHoof Siding for transporting four truckloads of donations to Chatham Outreach for Hunger on Friday morning.

“I am continually inspired by the generosity of our community and by the students, staff and parent volunteers who give their time and energy to make this event a success year after year,” says Lisa Harnarine, Principal of Ursuline College Chatham. “A special thank you to our amazing student leaders from UCC Cares, whose dedication and leadership bring this wonderful initiative to life.”

Lancers Scare Hunger is the biggest food drive of the year for Chatham Outreach for Hunger.

“This year's Lancers Scare Hunger was an outstanding success,” says Brenda LeClair, Executive Director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger. “The change in date, and even the rain did not keep the students and the community from responding. Twenty-two skids in total were collected and will be distributed to many families facing food insecurity in Chatham-Kent. Thank you to everyone who responded so generously and especially to the students who made it happen.”

Lancers Scare Hunger was founded in 2007 by UCC teacher Chris Gutteridge, who passed away in 2019.
