Lambton College Athletes Share the Power of Reading at Gregory A. Hogan

Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School in Sarnia celebrated World Read Aloud Day on February 4, an annual event held on the first Wednesday of February. The day focuses on the importance of reading aloud and how it helps build literacy skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading.

To celebrate, the school welcomed student athletes from Lambton College who volunteered their time to read to students in several grade levels. Their visit highlighted the positive impact of strong community partnerships and the important role of mentors and role models in education.

Albin Gashi, Captain of the Lambton College Men’s Basketball Team, read Salt in His Shoes by Delores Jordan to students in Grades 1 to 3. The story shared messages of perseverance and believing in yourself. Students listened closely and took part in discussions about working hard and never giving up.

Students in Grades 6 and 7 enjoyed a special reading of Teammates, read by Joshua Powers from the Lambton College Men’s Baseball team. The story’s focus on teamwork, friendship, and overcoming challenges resonated strongly with the older students, connecting naturally to their own experiences in and out of the classroom.

Kindergarten students were excited to welcome Aubrey Moffatt from Lambton College Women’s Softball, who read The Color of Love. The story’s message about kindness, inclusion, and caring for others was well received and created an enjoyable reading experience.

“World Read Aloud Day is a great opportunity to live out our faith by building strong relationships through service and community,” said Janine Ross, Vice Principal of Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School. “Our partnership with Lambton College helps students see faith in action, as these athletes show leadership, kindness, and the importance of giving back.”

Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School thanks Lambton College and the visiting student athletes for sharing their time and inspiring students through reading and positive example.
