School Communities Come Together for Terry Fox Run
St. Clair Catholic schools honoured the legacy of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope by hosting their own Terry Fox runs from late September to early October, raising awareness and money for cancer research.
It was an opportunity for school communities to come together with students, staff and families all invited to participate by walking or running for the important cause.
At St. Anne Catholic School in Sarnia, students and staff made the short walk across The Rapids Parkway to St. Patrick's Catholic High School, where they held their Terry Fox Run on the track.
Many students wore stickers reading ‘I’m finishing it for’ with the name of a loved one or ‘a cure’ written below.
Grade 7 student Leah March donned a red “Finish It” shirt worn by members of Terry’s Team, a symbol of being a cancer survivor.
March was only six years old when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right arm and underwent an 18-hour surgery in Toronto.
“It’s really important because I needed cancer research myself and that’s how I survived it,” says March of the funds raised through the Terry Fox Run. “Other kids should have it too. We should get a cure for cancer so we can stop all of this.”
March served as the national school ambassador for last year’s Terry Fox Run and has a powerful message for those battling cancer.
“You’re not alone,” she says. “There’s always somebody with you if you ever need help. You can do this.”
To date, the St. Anne’s school community has raised just over $3,900 for cancer research this year.
At St. Philip Catholic School in Petrolia, classrooms were challenged to collect change in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. Students and staff raised $1,050 through the initiative, bringing the school's total fundraising efforts to more than $1,600 when combined with online donations from the school community.
“We are incredibly proud of our students, families, and staff for embracing this challenge and demonstrating that even small acts of generosity can make a big difference,” says school administrator Stephanie Maxwell. “Their enthusiasm and commitment to supporting cancer research are a wonderful reflection of the spirit of our St. Philip’s community.”
This year marked the 46th annual Terry Fox Run. Earlier this year, the Terry Fox Foundation announced it had surpassed $1 billion in donations for cancer research.
