St. Peter Canisius Grade 1 Student Designs ‘Donut of the Day’ for Sarnia Bakery
Grade 1 students at St. Peter Canisius turned their school assignment into a sweet success!
As part of their persuasive writing unit, Fayth Kardas asked her class to design a donut and convince Global Donuts in Sarnia, why it should be the next ‘Donut of the Day.’
“I wanted a fun and meaningful way to celebrate my students’ learning at the end of our persuasive writing unit, and this donut project was the perfect fit,” says Kardas. “The best part was seeing my students’ creativity shine. They came up with unique donut flavours and thoughtful, persuasive reasons for why their creations should be chosen. I could not be more proud of their hard work, imagination, and enthusiasm throughout the entire project!”
Miss Kardas connected with Global Donut, an idea that came from a colleague who previously partnered with the local bakery.
The shop selected four student-designed donuts to be featured in a community vote on their Facebook page, aptly named ‘The Adoughrable Dough Poll.’
After a tight race, Abby Peters’ ‘Apple Donut’ was declared the winner and brought to life as the ‘Donut of the Day.’ The donut featured soft white vanilla cake with cinnamon, freshly diced apples right in the dough, and of course, sprinkles.
“At my house, I tried apple cinnamon and liked it, so I wanted to put it on my donut,” says Abby.
To celebrate, Siggy from Global Donuts brought the winning donut to Miss Kardas’ class for all the students to enjoy.
“Siggy at Global Donuts helped turn it into something even bigger by suggesting a community voting competition on social media,” says Kardas. “It truly became a team effort between supportive colleagues and Global Donuts to create such a memorable experience for my students.”
