UCC Multiculturism Week Celebrates Diversity, Inclusion and Community

Students and staff at Ursuline College Chatham came together to learn from one another and embrace their differences during Multiculturalism Week, held June 1–4.

The weeklong event hosted by the student group United Alliance featured fun and educational activities to recognize the many traditions, languages and perspectives that make up the school community.

Events included decorating classroom doors to show off countries and cultures, an international noodle fair prepared by the school’s hospitality classes, and a jersey day with face painting and henna art.

Grade 12 student Diego Rafael Funes, who is part of United Alliance, says it’s important for people to have opportunities to acknowledge their heritage.

“A lot of people are not born in Canada. They’re born somewhere else or their parents were, such as myself,” says Rafael Funes, who was born in El Salvador. “Our household has different traditions. A different culture. We speak another language. It’s important for students to feel seen and to know they’re being acknowledged, and that part of their identity is celebrated.”

“When students share their cultures and experiences, they help create a school community where everyone feels valued and respected,” says Director of Education Lisa Demers, who was at UCC Wednesday enjoying the festivities. “Celebrations like this reminds us that our differences are not barriers—they are strengths that bring us together.”

Students also created a video sharing real stories and perspectives about diversity at UCC.

The theme ‘World Cup of Cultures’ was chosen to coincide with the World Cup beginning this month.
