SHSM

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) allow students to focus on a career path that matches their interests and talents, while still earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.  For more information click here.

Students earn the SHSM’s distinctive red seal on their diploma when they:

  • complete a bundled set of 8–10 courses in their chosen sector, including a two‑credit co‑op placement
  • earn industry‑recognized certifications, such as First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS
  • gain real‑world experience through on‑the‑job learning with community and industry partners

Every SHSM includes five key components:

  1. Bundled Credits: A set of 8–10 Grade 11 and 12 courses connected to the student’s chosen sector, including co‑op.
  2. Certifications & Training: Sector‑recognized certifications and training opportunities.
  3. Experiential Learning: Activities that help students explore careers within the sector.
  4. Reach‑Ahead Experiences: Opportunities linked to post‑secondary pathways—apprenticeship, college, university, or workplace.
  5. Community & Industry Connections: Collaboration with partners to complete a coding, numeracy/literacy, or innovation/entrepreneurship project.
