Project Search

Project Search Logo

The Project SEARCH Transition-to-Work Program is a unique, business-led, one academic year employment preparation program for students with disabilities that takes place entirely at the workplace. Total workplace immersion facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training through internship rotations. The program culminates in individualized job search and placement.

Each Project SEARCH program includes an education partner, a host business and an employment agency.  The St. Clair Catholic District School Board is pleased to partner with host business, the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario,  to offer the Program SEARCH program in two locations:  Sarnia-Lambton YMCA Jerry McCaw Family Centre, and  Chatham-Kent YMCA.  As the host business,  the YMCA houses the programs, and provides internship opportunities in a variety of departments including Guest Services, Facilities & Maintenance, Child & Youth, Health & Wellness and Food Services.

Project SEARCH Model

Rather than a traditional classroom setting, students are immersed in a local business host site, following the school year calendar. A standard day is broken down as follows

  • Morning Instruction (Classroom): The day kicks off with team building, where interns learn and review critical employability skills (e.g., communication, problem-solving, and resume building)

  • Hands-On Application (Worksite): The bulk of the day is spent in the workplace completing hands-on, rotational internships.

  • Afternoon Reflection (Classroom): The day ends back in the classroom, where interns reflect on their experiences, journal key learnings, and plan for the next day.

Cost / Uniforms

There is no cost for families. Interns receive two Project SEARCH uniform shirts, to be worn with black pants and close-toed shoes.

Transportation

School bus transportation is available for program participants.
